THE great British public have been right behind Team GB from day one of the Olympics.
And at tomorrow night’s Closing Ceremony, the same army will rally round another GB they respect and admire — Gary Barlow.
The brave Take That star has battled through one of the worst weeks of his life after he and wife Dawn lost their baby daughter Poppy. Despite his devastation, Gary is bound to be on stage, his bandmates by his side, to make sure the group he found fame with take their place in a proud chapter of British history.
A source said: “Gary is going through a terrible time. The last week has been awful — as everyone can understand.
“The band have been there for him and totally understand if he doesn’t do the gig, Take That are on the running order and the organisers are prepared for all eventualities, but they all know Gary will be determined to perform.
“They haven’t rehearsed this week for obvious reasons but they are professionals and can turn it on under pressure.
“It will be a tough call for Gary but everyone will back his decision.”
Kim Gavin is the man behind the event. He brought Take That’s Circus and Progress Live tours together. He is also a close friend of Gary’s and will support him all the way.
Take That are down to perform Greatest Day as some of the biggest names in British pop also take to the stage.
George will do Faith and Freedom, The Spice Girls will “sing” a medley of their hits, and Kate Bush will make a very rare appearance.
Also on board are Sir Paul McCartney, Ray Davies from The Kinks and Liam Gallagher with Beady Eye. I hear the Coldstream Guards will do a version of Parklife.
Musical director David Arnold said: “If the opening ceremony was the wedding, this will be the wedding reception.”
Amen to that. And every fan watching — Bizarre included — will be sending Gary their love.
