Gary Barlow - an incredible man
Gary Barlow has exceeded all our expectations since joining the X Factor, and they were pretty high from the start! Here’s why he gets our vote for celebrity of the year…

2011 will be remembered as the year that Simon Cowell was rendered pretty much redundant on British television. It's a controversial statement we never imagined ourselves writing, seeing as Simon had a strangle hold on our viewing habits for years, either on or in charge of most of our favourite shows.

But going Cowell cold turkey hasn't been nearly as hard as we feared, thanks to one man (puts on best voiceover voice) GARY BAAARRRLLLLOOOWWWW!!

This has been the first year in ages that Simon hasn't monopolised the ITV schedule after he bowed out of the auditions for Britain's Got Talent, but the biggest change was a Cowell-free judging panel on X Factor. The show that we were sure couldn't survive without him has survived. And thrived. We all know that the most interesting stuff takes place on the judging panel rather than on the stage and we had major doubts about the chemistry of the new mentors, so we're grateful that Gary stepped into Simon's Cuban heels and cha-cha-cha-ed away with the show.

He's also a much better dresser, in his Harris Tweed and sexy (so I'm told by MSN Celebrity's editor Lucy Mapstone) stubble. In fact, we think he deserves national treasure status, he's right up there with Bruce Forsyth, David Attenborough (and, er, Cheryl Cole) in our books!

More spiteful than Simon... in a good way
At times he's been a calming influence and a voice of reason when others on the panel are fighting, but in reality Gary's bitchier than the lot of them put together! He's been particularly mean to Louis, rubbishing his opinions and even saying that there's no point in him being there.

Gary's been accused of being (gasp!) nastier than Simon and tactically attacking rival acts, such as saying that Amelia was too shouty or that Little Mix's vocals weren't strong enough, to overshadow the shortcomings of Marcus Collins. But we can forgive his know-it-all attitude because in our eyes Gary more than deserves his elder statesman persona thanks to more than twenty years in the business: however ruthless he may act at times, he's earned it.

If you need more proof of his powerful ways, Gary supported David Cameron in his election campaign back when the Tories were the underdogs by performing Greatest Day at an event, and they were swept to power! Okay, so he probably can't be credited with the Conservatives win but there's no denying he has a winning touch... could it be magic?

    We love Gazza
Like most villainous masterminds, Gary leads a double life... charitable family man by day and dastardly X Factor judge by night.

Nice guy Gary climbed Kilimanjaro in 2009 and got some of his celeb mates to go with him, raising £6million in the process, and he organised this year's official Children In Need single. Gaz also donated his original handwritten lyrics to Back For Good to the Teenage Cancer Trust and he's planning a trip to the North Pole for Sports Relief. In short, he's a top bloke.

On top of all this Gary-shaped greatness, he's also one of the last male celebs around to have a scandal-free personal life. He's been happily married to Gail, one of Take That's old backing dancers, for over 10 years and they have three cherubic children.

But even now with his popularity at an all-time high, the down-to-earth star has said that he has no plans to capitalise on all that by re-launching his solo career and said that unlike Robbie Williams, he doesn't like the limelight and prefers to share the adoration with his bandmates. "No, not for me," he said recently when he was asked for the umpteenth time about a solo album. "It's funny because all the reasons someone would do [X Factor] - the money, to become more famous - I've got them already. I've joined just because I wanted to" he told The Guardian.

    More Barlow please!
So, sorry Simon; we don't miss you and we want to see more of Mr. Barlow on British telly in the near future. We're crossing everything that Gary is back on X Factor next year and we're happy to hear that he's keen to return too: "It's looking good that I won't get the sack at Christmas," he said. But until then, we've helpfully suggested some new roles for him now that X Factor is gone for another year...

Piers Morgan is busy in America, so we'd love it if Gary took over his Life Stories series and bullied the guests into revealing all their secrets. Or how about a Gary At Home style cooking show, a la Jamie Oliver? Gary in a pinny = Like.

Is it time for retirement, Lord Sugar? Gary could host The Apprentice and bang the table to his heart's content as he tells the hopefuls that they're "everything this competition doesn't need." And while we're thinking about it, Sir Barlow has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Or maybe even Lord Barlow.

The options are endless but one thing's for sure... 2011 was the year that our favourite Take That star morphed into our favourite star, period.

Bon.. on lui dit au monsieur qu'elle s'appelle Dawn ?? lol!
