Barlow tried to entice the prince to perform on the song when they met in a room showcasing the work of young Jamaican entrepreneurs

Gary Barlow has asked Prince Harry to perform on the special Diamond Jubilee song he is co-writing with Andrew Lloyd Webber in honour of the Queen.

The Take That star has begun a trip across the Commonwealth collecting performances from musicians for the official track that will be featured in the summer musical extravaganza marking the Queen's 60-year reign.

Music legend Stevie Wonder is among the all-star list of artists performing on the night, who include Sir Paul McCartney, JLS, Sir Elton John and Kylie Minogue.

The singer and the prince met when the two men visited an NGO providing educational and life skills training to children and young people in a deprived part of the Jamaican capital of Kingston.

Barlow tried to entice the prince to perform on the song when they met in a room showcasing the work of young Jamaican entrepreneurs, asking Harry: "I've started the Diamond Jubilee song and we're hoping to get you on a track."

When the prince replied: "I can't sing," Barlow persevered and said "tambourine?" then added "just one hit?"

The conversation quickly turned to the prince's Diamond Jubilee tour which has already taken him to Belize and the Bahamas and Harry told the singer: "It's been a fantastic week."

After the prince left Barlow remained upbeat about royal involvement in his project saying: "I'm sure we'll get him, he'll do it for the cause."

Barlow added: "We've not got experienced artists on this record we've got undiscovered people, we're going from Australia to Kenya and the Solomon Islands.

"It's all being recorded on a laptop, when we get back to London we're going to Abbey Road studios to mix it."

During Harry's visit to the organisation called Rise he toured a number of class rooms where children were undergoing lessons and joined a maths group where youngsters were learning about shapes and naming how many sides different objects had, from hexagons to octagons.

As the presentation ended the prince said: "I haven't had a clue what's being going on."

In the courtyard of the NGO's offices a drumming performance was staged for the royal followed by dancing featuring young people from helped by Rise.

At one point Harry was encouraged onto his feet and danced with a teenage girl gyrating his hips to the music before returning to his seat.

Among the audience was Rita Marley, the widow of reggae legend Bob Marley who presented the royal with a colourful scarf which had belonged to the couple and used on tour over seven years.

Harry was said to be deeply touched by the gift and before leaving kissed the former singer on the hand after a local student band had played Marley's big hit One Love which his widow sang
