Now the boyband hero is going it alone again after Take That pal Gary Barlow decided to return to The X Factor judging panel later this year.
The lads have agreed to do their own thing while Gary throws himself into the show, as well as organising the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert and becoming a dad for the fourth time.
Mark is being spurred on to come up with something special as Robbie Williams also plots more solo glory.
A source said: "Mark has already made serious headway. He has put together new material in the studio with top writers and is planning more sessions over the next few months.
"All the lads are behind him. Success in his own right and his own writing material have always been a massive motivation, so he's a happy man."
Mark blew a fortune trying to launch himself as a rock artist back in the Nineties. But his albums — Green Man, In Your Own Time and How The Mighty Fall — all tanked.
But since Take That reformed in 2006 Mark's banked millions with Gary, Robbie, Howard Donald and Jason Orange.
He clearly isn't giving up on his solo dream just yet and has nothing to lose. With all the dosh he's got in the bank, Mark could spend the rest of his life making paper planes if he wanted.
